Find and read your Sub-Zero model number
The model and serial tag is your shortcut to a one-trip repair. Here is exactly where to find it on a Gilroy built-in, and how to decode the series prefix so we load the right genuine OEM parts before we leave.
$89 service call, waived when you book the repair · 365-day warranty on all labor.
Where is the Sub-Zero model number?
On almost every Sub-Zero built-in the model and serial tag is inside the fresh-food cavity, on the upper-left wall or ceiling near the front edge — swing the door open and look up and to your left. On wine and undercounter units it sits on an inner side wall or behind the lower grille. The tag lists a model number (the series prefix, like BI-36 or 700TC) and a serial number. Read us both and we arrive with the right parts on the van.

Decode your Sub-Zero series prefix
The first letters or digits of the model number tell us the platform — and the platform tells us which parts, panels and procedures the job needs. Match yours below, then call (650) 668-1172 or book online with the full number.
The model/serial tag is usually inside the fresh-food cavity — upper-left wall or ceiling.
| Prefix | What it means |
|---|---|
| BI | Built-In — the panel-ready built-in refrigerators and freezers (side-by-side, over-and-under and French-door layouts) that flush-fit into cabinetry. |
| BR / BF | Column refrigerator (BR) and column freezer (BF) — single-temperature towers installed side by side or apart for a custom kitchen. |
| CL | Classic — the long-running legacy built-in line with the traditional grille and dual-refrigeration layout; common on older Gilroy estate kitchens. |
| IT | Integrated — fully flush, panel-ready units designed to disappear into cabinetry with no exposed stainless; cabinet-safe service required. |
| PRO | Professional — pro-grade built-ins with stainless interiors and heavy commercial-style doors; careful handling and sealed-system expertise needed. |
| UC | Undercounter — compact refrigeration, drawers and ice units that tuck under a counter, island or bar; tight pull-out work. |
| UW | Undercounter Wine — undercounter wine storage with single or dual temperature zones for reds and whites. |
| 532 / 550 | 500-series — earlier-generation built-in refrigerator/freezer platform; we still source genuine OEM parts and service these. |
| 600 / 632 / 642 / 650 / 685 | 600-series — the widely installed built-in generation (side-by-side, over-and-under and all-refrigerator/freezer configurations). |
| 700TC / 736 | 700-series integrated — panel-ready integrated columns and combinations; among the most cabinet-sensitive units to service. |
Have the model number ready when you call (650) 668-1172 — it lets us bring the right parts on the first visit.
Why your model number speeds up the repair
A Sub-Zero is not one appliance — it is several generations of built-in refrigeration that look similar but use different fans, defrost parts, door gaskets, control boards and sealed-system designs. A failed evaporator fan on a BI side-by-side is a different part number from the fan on a 700-series integrated column or a Classic dual-compressor unit. Without the model number, a technician is guessing — which usually means a return trip and a second visit fee.
When you give us the full model and serial off the tag, we look up the exact gasket, fan, sensor, drain part or control your unit takes and load the likely candidates onto the van before we drive out to Gilroy, Morgan Hill or San Martin. For South County estates with long rural driveways and gated access, a one-trip fix matters even more — nobody wants a second appointment days later just to fit a part we could have brought the first time.
The serial number matters too: it pins down the production run, so we order the correct revision of a part rather than a near-match that will not seat. We fit genuine OEM Sub-Zero parts only, back the work with a 365-day labor warranty, and the $89 service call is waived when you book the repair. If you are still not sure what you have, snap a photo of the tag and we will read it for you when you call.
Where the tag hides by unit type
The model and serial tag sits in a different spot depending on what kind of Sub-Zero you own; here is where to look first on each.
| Unit type | Where the tag usually is | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in fridge / freezer (BI, CL, 500/600) | Inside the fresh-food cavity, upper-left wall or ceiling near the front edge | Swing the door fully open and look up and to the left. |
| Integrated column (IT, 700-series) | Inner side wall of the cavity, near the top hinge side | Panel-ready doors hide it well — use a phone flashlight. |
| Undercounter (UC) & drawers | Inner side wall or behind the lower kickplate grille | On drawer units, pull the top drawer fully out. |
| Wine storage (UW) | Inner side wall behind the racks, or behind the lower grille | Slide a rack out to clear the line of sight. |
| Standalone ice maker | Inner side wall or behind the front grille panel | Empty the bin so you can read the upper wall. |
If the tag is worn or missing, photograph the door style and interior and call (650) 668-1172 — we can usually identify the platform on arrival and still source the correct genuine OEM part.
Quick answers
Model number — quick answers
Where exactly is the tag?
Inside the fresh-food section, on the upper-left wall or ceiling near the front. Wine and undercounter units carry it on an inner side wall or behind the lower grille.
Why do you need it?
So we bring the right genuine OEM part on the first visit. Series and production run change the exact fan, gasket, sensor and board your unit takes.
Model vs. serial — both?
Yes. The model tells us the platform; the serial pins the production run so we order the correct revision rather than a near-match.
Can you read it for me?
Absolutely. Photograph the tag and call (650) 668-1172 or book online — we decode the prefix and quote with confidence.
Reviews
One-trip repairs that started with a model number
They asked for my model number up front so they arrived with the right parts on the van. One trip, fixed. That kind of preparation is rare and saved us a second visit fee.
Our built-in Sub-Zero stopped holding temperature the week of a family party. They came out to Eagle Ridge, diagnosed a failing evaporator fan, and had it cold again the same visit. The $89 service call was waived once we approved the repair — straightforward and honest.
Older Classic-series built-in with the dual compressors. The tech clearly knew this generation inside out — sorted the defrost issue and replaced the gasket. Respectful of an older unit instead of pushing a new one.
I called from Morgan Hill expecting the usual “we don’t come out that far.” Instead they grouped me into their South County route the next day. Polite, tidy, and they explained exactly what the fridge needed before charging anything.
